We are proud of the work we have done to be more energy efficient and we’re committed to further minimising our energy consumption and using renewable sources of energy to lower our impact on the planet.
Energy use in our stores makes up roughly 80% of our entire carbon footprint.
That makes it our single biggest impact on the climate – and our single biggest opportunity to make significant improvements. Conserving energy and increasing efficiency are two important measures we can take to reduce our contribution to climate change.
By end of 2010 we aim to reduce our energy use in new stores by 25% and to obtain 50% of our energy from renewable sources in all of our company-owned stores.
What We've Been Doing
In the last few years we’ve made significant progress in understanding and developing new strategies to reduce our energy consumption. We continue to purchase renewable energy that represents 20% of the total electricity used in our company-operated stores in the U.S. and Canada. We’re also investing in new lighting and improving the efficiency of HVAC (heating, ventilation and cooling) systems and other equipment.
Our electricity use decreased by 1.7% in company-owned stores in 2009.
Renewable energy purchases increased to the equivalent of 25% of the electricity used in company-owned stores in 2009.
